Incorporating Rough and Tumble Play into Childcare Programs
During this workshop you will gain a better understanding of how to incorporate elements of safe risk play into early years environments. Review strategies and ideas for including rough and tumble and superhero play into early childhood education curriculum.
The Reasons Why
Safe Risk Play
Risky play is a natural part of children’s play and development
During play children will often seek out opportunities for challenge, testing limits and exploring boundaries
Are we providing opportunities for safe risk play in our programs?
Do our inside and outdoor environments support safe risk play?
By offering children the opportunity to explore safe risk play we are supporting critical thinking and problem-solving skills as well as large motor skill development
How Can Educators Raise Awareness About Safe Risk Play With Families?
The key is for a teaching team to share the same point of view and approach to safe risk play within a program
Demonstrating a consistent approach and open communication will support families in understanding the important role of safe risk play in early childhood
Creating a well-managed and supportive environment that creates opportunities for discovery and exploration that supports a child’s overall development
Superhero play is a form of imaginative play
Children use figurines, costumes and or props to imitate and celebrate superheroes that they admire
Young children can be influenced by media (T.V. and/or movies) and may reenact what they have seen in their play
Most children understand that these characters are pretend
Some children need assistance with this understanding what pretend vs real mean

Early Childhood Educator, Consultant and Author
I have been an Early Childhood Educator for 20 years, having received my Diploma in Early Childhood Education from Douglas College. Since then, I have gained experience in a variety of areas within the field of Early Childhood Education: Director of a preschool, supervisor of after-school care as well as 3-5 and Infant Toddler programs and centre management. My primary focus has evolved to encompass team leadership, management training and program development. I have had articles published in provincial and national ECE journals on the topic of emergent curriculum and leadership. My goal as an Early Childhood Educator and facilitator is to support fellow educators and early years professionals in providing high-quality early learning experiences for children and families.

Management and leadership courses offered by an Early Childhood Educator truly is a gift in this line of work. Julie Hansen’s insight and understanding of childcare and early learning dynamics developed my skills and confidence as a manager. Her ideas are innovative, thoughtful and easy to implement for myself and my team. I enjoyed my one to one coaching calls, team workshops and leadership series I have taken with Julie. I recommend her to any new or veteran ECE or ECE Manager.
